Our Good Deeds
Giving back to the county we call home
Cornwall is more than the setting for our hotels. It’s our home, our community and a place we feel incredibly lucky to be part of.
Across The Cornwall Hotel Collection, we believe that being a good business means doing good beyond our hotels, too. From fundraising for local and national charities, supporting community groups and recognising the people who give their time to others, to protecting Cornwall’s coastline, wildlife and heritage, we’re committed to making a positive difference wherever we can.
Our hotels each have their own deep-rooted connections with the communities around them, but together we’re able to make an even greater impact.
Here are some of the good deeds we’re proud to have been part of.
Supporting Our Communities
We’re passionate about supporting the towns and communities around our hotels, whether that means sponsoring a local sports club, helping a school raise funds, or getting involved in events that bring people together.
Across The Cornwall Hotel Collection, we regularly donate hotel stays and gift vouchers as raffle prizes to support local schools, nurseries, colleges, theatre groups, choirs, hospitals, nursing homes, Rotary clubs and sports teams. Since 2022,
The Greenbank alone has donated more than £4,500 worth of gift vouchers to worthy causes.
Our community support has included Falmouth Skate Park, Falmouth Spring Flower Show, Cornwall Music Service Trust, Falmouth Marine Band, Falmouth Primary Academy, The Henderson Academy, Flushing Regatta, Penhaligon’s Friends and Falmouth Working Boat Association, alongside many others.
We also sponsor and support community events and sporting organisations including Falmouth Gig Club, Falmouth Rugby Club, Penryn Rugby Club, Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival, Falmouth Week, Falmouth Oyster Festival, Falmouth Classics Regatta, Truro Food Festival and Falmouth Town Council’s Charity Ball.
In 2024, we sponsored new football kits for young players at Grasshoppers Football Club in Truro, helping the team head into their latest season looking the part.
We’re also proud to support local education. Our chefs have visited schools to share their knowledge with the next generation of culinary talent, while The Greenbank Community Fund has supported projects such as Falmouth Primary School’s Key Stage 2 choir, contributing £500 towards a trip to Birmingham for the National Music for Youth Festival.
Raising money for Good Causes
The Coastal Charity Convoy for Bliss
In October 2025, colleagues from across The Cornwall Hotel Collection, alongside friends, family and four-legged companions, took on a 17-mile Charity Coastal Convoy from The Alverton in Truro to The Falmouth Hotel, stopping at The Greenbank along the way.
The route took us through beautiful Cornish countryside, across the King Harry Ferry and along the coast towards Falmouth. Together, we raised £4,000 for Bliss, the UK’s leading charity supporting babies born premature or sick.
The cause had particular significance for The Greenbank’s General Manager, Matt Garland, whose son Jesse spent time in neonatal care.
The Great Coast-to-Coast Charity Dinner
In February 2025, The Alverton hosted the inaugural Great Coast-to-Coast Charity Dinner, bringing together some of Cornwall’s leading chefs for an extraordinary five-course celebration of local produce.
The evening welcomed 120 guests and raised an incredible £16,000 for Hospitality Action, supporting people in the hospitality industry who have fallen on hard times.
Cornwall Air Ambulance
Our commitment to Cornwall Air Ambulance goes back several years. In 2019, it was The Greenbank’s Charity of the Year, with a target of £10,000 for the New Heli Appeal.
Thanks to an incredible programme of fundraising – including team skydives, a coastal walking challenge, pub quizzes, charity auctions and generous guest donations – the final total reached an amazing £34,000.
Six members of the team signed up to skydive, raising around £4,000 between them, although poor weather meant only Managing Director Ben Young and Duty Manager Jane Williams were ultimately able to make the jump.
Charity Runs and Challenges
Our teams continue to get involved in fundraising challenges. During Mental Health Awareness Week in 2025, members of The Greenbank team completed a 10K charity run for Mind, raising £962.
In 2023, The Alverton’s receptionist Saff completed a gruelling 24-hour run in aid of the Cornwall Community Foundation, completing a five-mile loop throughout the night and day and raising £1,110.
The Working Boat Pub Quiz
Since 2018, our Sunday night pub quiz at The Working Boat in Falmouth has been turning local knowledge into fundraising power.
Each month, our team and regular quiz-goers nominate a charity close to their hearts, with a suggested £1 entry fee donated to the chosen cause.
The quizzes raised £2,965 in 2024 and an incredible £4,475 throughout 2025.
Over the years, beneficiaries have included Crisis, Mind UK, Georgia’s Voice, West Cornwall Search and Rescue, Penryn and Falmouth Food Bank, Falmouth Community Football, Man Down, The Wave Project, Cornwall Hospice Care, K9 Crusaders, ShelterBox, Hospitality Action, The Fishermen’s Mission, Parkinson’s UK, British Heart Foundation, Surfers Against Sewage, Movember and Cornwall Air Ambulance, among many others.
Cornwall Community Foundation
We’re proud supporters of the Cornwall Community Foundation, which works with thousands of local community groups and charities across the county, from food banks and mental health services to youth clubs, environmental projects and social groups for older people.
In 2023, The Greenbank and The Alverton joined forces to raise more than £8,000 for two very local causes supported through the foundation: Penn An Dre Residents’ Association in Truro and Pendennis Leisure Centre CIO.
Room to Reward
We’re proud to partner with Room to Reward, a charity that recognises the UK’s “Hidden Heroes” – inspirational volunteers who give their time and energy to help others, often without expecting recognition.
Through the partnership, our hotels donate unsold rooms so nominated volunteers can enjoy a well-deserved complimentary break.
In 2025, three Hidden Hero breaks were delivered across The Cornwall Hotel Collection, with stays including The Greenbank and The Alverton. Guests included volunteers such as Stephanie Hancorn of Weston Hospicecare, Carol Morse of Sterts Arts & Environmental Centre and Susan Bishop of Community Enterprises PL12.
For us, these stays are about more than providing a room. They’re a chance for extraordinary people to pause, recharge and feel recognised for the often unseen work they do in their communities.
Supporting Local Events & Causes
Some of our favourite good deeds happen through events that bring people together. At The Greenbank, we host the annual Dragon Boat Race on our private quay. The free community event brings teams together for a day of racing, with 10% of proceeds from food and drink sales donated to a local charity. Previous beneficiaries include Mylor Sailability, Man Down and the RNLI.
We also support the annual Pink Wig celebrations, hosting a pre-party for participants, friends and family during Falmouth Week and donating a portion of sales from a special Pink Wig cocktail menu. The event raises thousands of pounds for breast cancer awareness, research and treatment.
In 2023, The Greenbank was also proud to sponsor the return of the Tall Ships to Falmouth, welcoming sailors with accommodation and hosting a special Captains’ Dinner.
Caring for Cornwall’s Coast and Wildlife
With hotels surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes and coastline in the country, we feel a responsibility to help protect them.
The Greenbank has been a business member and supporter of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust for more than ten years, and has hosted events for the organisation.
We also host twice-yearly beach cleans for Surfers Against Sewage, supported by Sharp’s Brewery.
Members of our hotel and Working Boat teams join local volunteers to help keep Falmouth’s coastline clean, with refreshments provided for everyone who gets involved. Our teams also take part in Falmouth’s annual Spring Clean.
At The Alverton, we’ve joined the Truro City Clean Up, helping remove litter, stickers and other waste from the city’s streets and green spaces.
Making More Sustainable Choices
Doing good also means looking at how we operate every day.
The Greenbank is proud to hold a Gold Level Green Tourism award, recognising our ongoing work across areas including energy and water efficiency, waste management and biodiversity.
Across our hotels, we’re continually looking for ways to reduce waste and make more responsible choices. At The Greenbank, this includes:
- Sourcing food and drink from local suppliers wherever possible, supporting Cornwall’s producers while reducing food miles.
- Using the Good Seafood Guide when purchasing seafood, helping us choose sustainable species and support responsible Cornish fisheries.
- Providing reusable glass water bottles in bedrooms and free tap-water refills for visitors.
- Using reusable glasses at events to reduce single-use plastic.
- Eliminating plastic straws in favour of biodegradable alternatives.
- Recycling extensively, with dedicated staff training and waste compactors that have helped reduce bin collections by half.
- Using energy-saving water pumps.
- Offering biodegradable coffee capsules supplied by the Eden Project and participating in Cornico Coffee’s recycling scheme.
- Choosing recycled paper for marketing materials and wooden signage wherever possible.
- Using plant-based cleaning products throughout the hotel.
We also encourage guests to make greener choices when travelling, including offering incentives for those arriving by public transport, promoting the Fal Mussel Card and encouraging visitors to make the most of Falmouth’s excellent boat and water taxi connections.
A Little Can Go A Long Way
We know that positive change doesn’t always come from one big gesture. Sometimes it’s a donated room, a sponsored sports team, a beach clean, a quiz entry or a pint bought at the right event.
Whether we’re supporting a national charity or a small community project just around the corner, we’re proud to use our hotels, our teams and our position within Cornwall to give something back to the places and people that make this county so special.
And we’re only getting started.
